Agricultural and Farming Land

South Dakota is truly the land of infinite variety! In all directions from the Black Hills you will find vast prairies covered in native grasses, rich, fertile and highly productive farm ground producing ever increasing quantities of irrigated and non-irrigated crops. While this area is not in a heavy rainfall location, the prairies are sodded with highly nutritious and drought-resistant native grasses.  A large portion of land suitable for the production of dry land small grain can be found to the East of the Black Hills, and substantial flood irrigation projects are situated to the East and the North of the Hills.

Grazing permits can be found on public land on a case by case basis. Large quantities of lumber are harvested in the Black Hills annually. One of the regions largest cattle feed lots operates near Hot Springs. This facility, built in the 1970's has pen capacity of 25,000 head and finishes about 50,000 animals per year. Cattle, sheep, buffalo, and some dairy production rounds out our agricultural community. Contact us for information about farming and ranching in Western South Dakota – the land of infinite variety!
