Ellsworth Air Force Base
Nestled in the majestic Black Hills of South Dakota, Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., is located 10 miles east of Rapid City and just outside of Box Elder. The base - home to the 28th Bomb Wing - is one of only two B-1B bases in the world. Ellsworth is surrounded by numerous scenic sights. Schools: Incoming families are encouraged to register their children in school as soon as possible. Children who live on base or in Box Elder, are eligible to enroll in the Douglas Public School District. For those children living in or around Rapid City, they are eligible to register into the Rapid City Area Schools District.
Box Elder, SD is one of the fastest growing communities in western South Dakota. Somewhat of a sleeper community, due to its close proximity to Rapid City, this town is ripe for commercial development due to the new LIBERTY BLVD at Exit 67 on Interstate 90. With daily rail freight service and just 7 minutes to the I-90 and Heartland Expressway exit, Box Elder offers many opportunities for residential and business expansion.
Box Elder hosts the SOUTH DAKOTA AIR and SPACE MUSEUM, a collection of planes from various historic periods of U.S. military air operations. The indoor and outdoor exhibits are open to the public, along with guided bus tours of Ellsworth Air Force Base located right next door. Two of the giant outdoor displays are of a B1 and a B52 Bomber, this is a must stop for anyone traveling through the area.
For any family with children, moving or relocating into a new community, is the importance of a good school system. Box Elder and EAFB are both served by the Douglas School District, regarded as one of the finest K-12 public school systems in South Dakota. Plus, within just minutes of the Box Elder community you can find schools of higher education such as: South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Black Hills State University and National American University.
